All Starlight technology Night Vision Devices consist of several main parts: an objective lens, an eyepiece, a power supply and an image intensifier tube (Photocathode Tube).

Smart Total Darkness Technology finally provides the user total control in the hi-tech industry of Night Vision. The Smart Series Night Vision Scopes have been designed according to the latest computer technology. This technology consists of a computerized proximity sensor, digital controls and a long-range Infrared Illuminator.

Onboard computer systems identify the users intention of looking through the scope. When the scope is brought to the user's eye, it automatically turns on. When removed from the eye, the scope turns off (you must engage the proximity sensor for this feature to work). The user will never have to worry about turning his or her scope on or off. Smart series scopes automatically sense when they are no longer used and will shut off and enter their sleep mode.
All the controls and buttons are digital. Even if your batteries are low, don't worry the Smart Series will let you know. Our smart scopes have a 3-button digital control panel that allows the user to easily engage the main power, Infrared Illuminator and the proximity sensor. Color coded LEDs let you know the mode of operation you are using.

Night Vision Devices Generation

A Night Vision Device can be either a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation unit. What this stands for is what type of image intensifier tube is used for that particular device; the image intensifier tube is the heart and soul of an NVD.

1st generation is currently the most popular type of night vision in the world. Utilizing the basic principles described earlier, a 1st generation unit will amplify the existing light several thousand times letting you clearly see in the dark. These units provide a bright and sharp image at a low cost, which is perfect, whether you are boating, observing wildlife, or providing security for your home. You may notice the following when you are looking through a 1st Gen. unit.

A slight high-pitched whine when the unit is on.
The image you see may be slightly blurry around the edges. This is known as Geometric Distortion.
When you turn a 1st Gen. unit off it may glow green for some time.
These are inherent characteristics of a 1st Gen. unit and are normal.

2nd generation is primarily used by law enforcement or for professional applications. This is because the cost of a 2nd Gen. unit is approximately $500.00 to $1000.00 more then a 1st Gen. The main difference between a 1st and a 2nd generation unit is the addition of a micro-channel plate, commonly referred to as a MCP. The MCP works as an electron amplifier and is placed directly behind the photocathode. The MCP consists of millions of short parallel glass tubes. When the electrons pass through these short tubes, thousands more electrons are released. This extra process allows 2nd generation units to amplify the light many more times then 1st generation giving you a brighter and sharper image.
2nd Gen. IIT ATNs standard 2nd generation tubes are high quality with exceptional brightness and resolution. Each tube has a micro channel plate, multi-alkaline photocathode with built-in power supply.

CGT IIT.The CGT type of Image Intensifier tubes are engineered for significantly enhanced performance over current 2nd generation IITs. Infrared Illuminators and How Far You Can See With Night Vision Technology

All Starlight scopes need some light to amplify. This means that if you were in complete darkness you could not see. Due to this we have a built in infra-red illuminator (IRI) on all of our scopes. Basically what an IRI does is throw out a beam of infra-red light that is near invisible to the naked eye but your NVD can see it. This allows you to use your scope even in total darktness. The IRI works like a flashlight and the distance you can see with it will be limited. We do use the most powerful eye-safe illuminator on the market. This allows our IRI to extend out to 100 yards However, because of the power at a short distance the IRI may cover only 40-60% of the viewing area.

There are many different variables that can affect the distance you can see with a Night Vision device. First, what are you trying to see? Are you looking for another boat on the water or are you looking for a rabbit in the woods? The larger the object the easier it is to see. Plus, are you trying to see details (what we call recognition range) or are you just trying to see if something is there? Maybe you will just see the movement, but won’t be able to determine 100% who or what it is. This is called “detection range”. A second variable is lighting conditions. The more ambient light you have (starlight, moonlight, and infrared light) the better and further you will be able to see. You can always see further on a night where the moon and stars are out, then if it is cloudy and overcast. We typically state that you can tell the difference between a male and a female or a dog and a deer at about 75 to 100 yards. However, if you were looking across an open field and there was a half moon out you could see a barn or a house 500 yards away.

Total Darkness Technology finally provides the user total control in the hi-tech industry of Night Vision. In order to understand thermal imaging, it is important to understand something about light. The amount of energy in a light wave is related to its wavelength: Shorter wavelengths have higher energy. Of visible light, violet has the most energy, and red has the least. Just next to the visible light spectrum is the infrared spectrum.
Infrared light can be split into three categories:

Near-infrared (near-IR) - Closest to visible light, near-IR has wavelengths that range from 0.7 to 1.3 microns, or 700 billionths to 1,300 billionths of a meter.
Mid-infrared (mid-IR) - Mid-IR has wavelengths ranging from 1.3 to 3 microns. Both near-IR and mid-IR are used by a variety of electronic devices, including remote controls.
Thermal-infrared (thermal-IR) - Occupying the largest part of the infrared spectrum, thermal-IR has wavelengths ranging from 3 microns to over 30 microns.

A special lens of thermal scope focuses the infrared light emitted by all of the objects in view.
The focused light is scanned by a phased array of infrared-detector elements. The detector elements create a very detailed temperature pattern called a thermogram. It only takes about one-thirtieth of a second for the detector array to obtain the temperature information to make the thermogram. This information is obtained from several thousand points in the field of view of the detector array.
The thermogram created by the detector elements is translated into electric impulses.
The impulses are sent to a signal-processing unit, a circuit board with a dedicated chip that translates the information from the elements into data for the display.
The signal-processing unit sends the information to the display, where it appears as various colors depending on the intensity of the infrared emission. The combination of all the impulses from all of the elements creates the image.
Unlike traditional most night-vision equipment which uses image-enhancement technology, thermal imaging is great for detecting people or working in near-absolute darkness with little or no ambient lighting (i.e. stars, moonlight, etc, )

Want something more advanced than a 1st Generation Monocular but thought you couldn’t afford it? Try our ATN Night Storm 3B Spot Spec unit. It is an inexpensive way to get into a higher Generation unit.
Our "3B" B-Spot Spec Tubes are 3rd Generation units with blemishes within the viewing area that exceed the allowable amount for our standard grade.
Grade "B" Tubes with minor blemishes with severity that is not to detract from normal viewing. These are usually the result of manufacturing imperfections that have no or very negligible affect on reliability and are not a cause for repair work. Cosmetic Blemishes can include Emission Points, Black Spots or Dark Lines.
These cosmetic imperfections do not impair the performance or warranty of these tubes, and provide a very cost effective option of owning a top-quality unit at a fraction of the regular price.
Emission Points.
A steady or fluctuating pinpoint of bright light in the image area that does not go away when all light is blocked from the objective lens of the monocular. The position of an emission point within the image area does not move.
Black Spots.
These are cosmetic blemishes in the image intensifier or dirt or debris between the lenses. Black spots are acceptable as long as they do not interfere with viewing the image.
Dark Lines
One or a few irregular dark thin lines seen in some areas within the field of view. This is typically viewed in high light conditions.

The initial impression of comparing the white phosphorus image to the green image is that the green image is brighter. However, after viewing the white image for a short period of time (a minute or two) that impression changes to the green image producing a glare-type image and the white phosphorus producing a non-glaring, detailed image, like looking at a black and white photo. When using the scope continuously for extended periods of time, the white image also seems less stressful.
The Commission is very pleased with the performance of the NVM14-WPT for the current application and believes that it will provide very good performance for a variety of other applications.

Night Vision Technology for Interns

Did your summer involve night-vision goggles, infra-red LEDs, and acoustic transects? Marissa Maldonado, Midlothian, Va., and Samantha Sterman, of New York, N.Y., can say "yes" to that question – they interned at Mammoth Cave National Park from June through August and used night-vision goggles along with infra-red LEDs at roost entrances and drove acoustic transects along roads to monitor bats.

“We have some unusual work for students who are conservation-minded and want to spend their summer outdoors,” said Eddie Wells, the park’s volunteer coordinator. “We hosted 16 interns this summer, and sent them out to test water quality in the backcountry, inventory protected plants, combat exotic plants, as well as monitor the park’s bat populations.”

Assigned to the night shift, Maldonado and Sterman traveled all over the 53,000-acre park in search of bats. They positioned themselves at known bat roosts (cave entrances, buildings, and trees) at dusk and waited for bats to exit. Using infrared lights and night-vision goggles, they counted each bat and recorded its species, if known.

Some nights Maldonado and Sterman gathered data using a recording-bat-detector on loan to the park from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). With a microphone attached to the roof of a truck, they drove an established route at 20 mph. The detector recorded ultrasonic calls (echolocation) that bats make when traveling or feeding in low light conditions.

“The information we gain from this study will be shared with USFWS and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources,” said Park Superintendent Patrick Reed. “With white-nose syndrome on our doorstep, these are critical data that we haven’t previously collected--at least not on this scale.”

White-nose syndrome is a fungal disease that has killed approximately 1 million bats in the eastern United States since 2006. In caves where WNS is present, up to 95 percent of the bats have died during hibernation. The disease has not been discovered in Kentucky to date.

Maldonado graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelor’s degree in biology (2010). Sterman will begin her second year at Oberlin College this fall.

The summer interns at Mammoth Cave were hired through the Student Conservation Association (SCA); the park received special funding through the National Park Service Youth Intern Program.

“SCA provides us with skilled, enthusiastic workers,” said Dr. Rick Toomey, director of the Mammoth Cave International Center for Science and Learning, who coordinates park research projects. “The students get experience working in land management by helping the park with significant environmental issues. Medical Air Crews Add Night Vision Night Goggles

An air medical transport team has added night vision goggles to help them do their jobs more accurately when accidents happen at night. According to Peter Patton of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center's life flight crew, their goal is to get injured patients the urgent care they need to survive.
"The majority of patients that we transport are extremely serious," Patton said.
Half of the flights this team of pilots and flight nurses make are after dark, where they have to land in fields or on remote roads, which is why they've added another the night vision goggles.
"Essentially, it's like having two little miniature TVs in front of your eyes," Patton said. "They take the outside light and they take the image from that light and magnify it and then project it onto a screen that sits right in front of our eyes."
Once reserved only for military pilots, night vision goggles use the science of optics to take light from stars, the moon and other sources and amplify it 10,000 times to light up the view.
The goggles emit green light since the eyes can distinguish more shades of green than any other color.
"These goggles are actually so detailed that as we were taxiing out over the grass runway just now, i can see the loose grass flying up in the air," said Sheldon Dreaddy, a flight nurse.
Flight nurses said that having the goggles has made their job safer.
"They've made it so detailed that its like flying during the day," said Janelle Zehr, a flight nurse.
The night goggles are intended to create safer flights to save lives.
